Another option is to use http://new.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/ it's pretty alternative if identifont can't find a match. Just make sure you upload a fairly large clear sample for it to match to.

Cheers

Very true Cole, will be grate when designers can use fonts in print and online easily - Typekit success with new font foundries suggests this may be a Loy closer to reality

Funny...I found this because I was doing exactly what you describe here; looking for a compatible web alt for the trusty ole Gotham.

I feel Typekit will be a huge asset to designer/web designers. The price is good etc.

The one initial drawback I see as a designer for both web and print is this: If the designer's webfont library is all online and "web font" only, he/she will be doing "similar" searches as a normal practice unless they actually buy the font to use in mockups or related print design pieces. Maybe that isn't so bad, especially if one sticks to a few "go-to" webfonts for certain uses and perhaps a few "go-to" fonts for display type.

I still like to have my fonts available locally within my design files.

No doubt Typekit is a major advancement in this area.

The ideal world would be one which you could use a font for all design purposes rather than having to look for similar fonts. Perhaps Adobe, Apple, Quark, Microsoft et al need to figure out how to allow their print apps tap fonts over the web as well. yeah, I can see some net issues there, but it could be a way to license fonts across the board for any use.

I think in this particular case we ended up using <a href="http://typekit.com/fonts/106" rel="nofollow">Proxima Nova</a>.
