Well, I've used both and paypal is so far superior both in service and fees charged it's staggering. There is no competition whatsoever.

I had a friend in America who wanted to buy an item off me but had reached the limit in her paypal account. I had used Paymate ages ago when it was linked with Australian Ebay so suggested them. At the time, their costs were reasonable (very similar to paypal). Well, things have changed, it's been one drama after another.

First my friend pays then get a shock when she finds they've charged her $21.00 US to make the $700 payment to me??? I check my account and they've charged me $12 to receive it. I email them to find out the charges to deposit it to my
account and it's another 2.4% of the Australian currency total. When I went to XE.com to check the rate, $688 transferred to $979 AUD but when paymate went to pay it into my account, it was $897 AUD. Hmmmm. They inform me this is my fault for not getting my buyer to pay in AUD. Three days later, I'm still waiting for the payment to clear. It was meant to go through Tuesday night. I email them to find out what is happening and they get back to me finally and tell me the payment has bounced back because the account has closed. This is in spite of the fact that they put through $1.62 and reversed it on Wednesday to verify the account. They tell me the account information must be wrong. I've just emailed them back to tell them the account is working fine and it's their mistake. I will never use paymate again. They're hopeless.

Ellie, that is a useful calculator, maybe the author will extend it to Paymate.

Paymate's fees are complex to work out - I'd like to see a service like ppcalc.com offered on the Paymate website so that sellers can work out what price to set for their products if using Paymate so that all costs are covered.

It's good to see the ACCC taking a strong stance against eBay's decision to make PayPal the only payment method accepted on eBay.

The change was originally slated for June 17, but was delayed until July 15. They've now been delayed indefinitely.
