Consumers spend 33% of their time online

Rubicon 2008 Online Advertising Market Report

Rubicon 2008 Online Advertising Market Report

Fascinating snippet from the Rubicon 2008 Online Advertising Market Report:

Ten years ago only 5% of consumer time was spent online, today consumers are spending 33% of time online.

The stat is a bit odd – I think this percentage must refer to the time consumers spend consuming media.

But what I am interested in is the shift represented, a shift in attention. 6 times as much attention online as there was 10 years ago. More attention available online than ever before.

That is why online marketing is so important for a business.

70% of today’s high schoolers intend to start their own companies

From Brian Armstrong I came across this quote from the Wall Street Journal:

The most compelling statistic of all? Half of all new college graduates now believe that self-employment is more secure than a full-time job. Today, 80% of the colleges and universities in the U.S. now offer courses on entrepreneurship; 60% of Gen Y business owners consider themselves to be serial entrepreneurs, according to Inc. magazine. Tellingly, 18 to 24-year-olds are starting companies at a faster rate than 35 to 44-year-olds. And 70% of today’s high schoolers intend to start their own companies, according to a Gallup poll.

… Without knowing it, we have been training a whole generation of young entrepreneurs.

I spent 2 hours yesterday showing my nephew how to choose domains and build an online business. 15, and fast on the uptake, you could see the ideas take hold. Why work for someone when you can work for yourself?

Brand Management or Tribe Management

Am I the only small business owner who doesn’t really get the whole brand thing?

When people want me to part with my cash to ‘build my brand’, I am suspicious.

Sure I want a good name for my business, and a good logo.  And I do believe that brands exist (easy to say, hard to do).

I just don’t think they exist in the way that most people seem to want me to.  You know, spend up big on graphics, colours and things I can’t measure.

In the meantime, Seth Godin has written a post on Tribe Management that really worked for me. It speaks to me so much more than brand management.

Seth’s writing just gets better and better. If you haven’t subscribed to his blog yet, do so.

The 5 New Tools of Online Marketing

When you market a business online, you have a lot of tools at your disposal. At times it can be very confusing to try and understand how they all fit in.

Here are 5 categories for the new tools of online marketing. Understanding these 5 categories will help you plan and budget for your online marketing.

Keyword Analysis Helps you pinpoint exactly what your prospective customers are searching for. Provides insight into their buying intentions and helps target your online marketing efforts.

Keyword analysis tools and databases are available that report on popularity of keywords and competition.
Content Marketing Publish content that helps solve a problem, and build an audience that includes prospective customers. A content led strategy builds trust and generates targeted prospects for your business.

Content marketing tools include blogs, forums, articles, social networking participation, press releases and eBooks.
Search Marketing Many people turn to search engines like Google as the first port of call to research products and services. Find the most effective blend of paid and organic search marketing strategies to attract visitors to your online business who are interested in your products and services.

Pay per click and pay per action search options are available from the search engines themselves. There is an entire industry that has built up around organic search consulting and tools.
Email Marketing A lot of prospective customers will not buy from you on their first visit to your site. Some of them will sign up to receive information or education via an opt in email list. Email marketing is a great tool for building an ongoing conversation with prospects.

Email autoresponders are at the core of email marketing.

Affiliate Marketing Do you want other businesses to help sell your product or service on a commission basis? Or other online businesses to help build your email list? Affiliate marketing lets you broaden rapidly your online marketing activity.

There are affiliate marketing networks you can use to access networks of affiliates, or website plugins you can use to run your own affiliate programmes.

I’ve used this categorisation for some time now, and its pretty useful. There are other marketing tools online that don’t fit that neatly into this model – feel free to suggest how you see those tools either fitting into these categories, or requiring new categories of their own.

A World Filled with Opportunity

The best blog in the world is Seth’s Blog. And he has just republished one of his best posts, written four years ago.

Only 2 Years Left

Don’t you just love it?

we still live in a world that’s filled with opportunity … stop thinking about how crazy the times are, and start thinking about what the crazy times demand … there has never been a better time for the new

While not reading Seth’s Blog back then, I did read an article by Chris Anderson (just over three years ago) that fired me up with enough of the same sense of opportunity to get out and chase some of those opportunities.

But Seth’s article asks a very challenging question. He says it is not only is it possible to do something, it is possible to do something different. Very different.

… the one question that every organization and every individual needs to ask today: Why not be great?

Great doesn’t mean enormous, doesn’t mean biggest. But great is very apparent when you come across it.

Its a great question. Time to plan for the new year!

The Top Marketing Blog Posts of 2007

Thanks to David Meerman Scott for pointing to this summary of the top marketing blog posts of 2007.

The Benefits of Online Marketing for Small to Medium Enterprises

Dynamic Business Magazine Online Marketing Article by Rebecca SpicerRebecca Spicer of Dynamic Business Magazine prepared an article on Online Marketing for the October 2007 Young Guns edition. I was one of the people she interviewed for the Online Marketing story.

Here is a link to the article: Online Marketing, Dynamic Business Magazine, Oct 2007 ‘Young Guns’ edition.

Naturally I think the article is excellent, as I am one of the interviewees.

Rebecca also interviews Michael Rom of NetStarter (web design and SEO), Paula O’Connell of Returnity (email marketing) and our clients Paul & Jenny Geelen.

Rebecca’s summary is clean and to the point:

The general consensus among our experts is that while all these online marketing channels can be used individually, they’re likely to achieve better results when used together in an all-encompassing online marketing strategy, which should also integrate with your offline marketing.

If you live in Australia, there is currently a special offer that means you can subscribe to Dynamic Business for 12 months for $11. You can find it from their website, or here is a link to their subscription page.

Announcing a New Blog for Online Marketing Strategy and Tactics

Welcome to OM4 - Online Marketing for Fun and ProfitWelcome to OM4, a new blog about online marketing strategy and tactics.

This blog is for you if you own a business, or are responsible for marketing a business online.

This blog will cover online marketing strategy, so you can make better decisions for your business and address new opportunities.

Reading this blog will also improve your knowledge of online marketing tactics. What they are, what they can be used for, how much they cost, and how effective have they been. Understanding tactics gives you a feel for what is possible, and will help you decide what is appropriate for you.

There are many excellent blogs about online marketing, but none focussing (as I am) on how it can be used to address new opportunities. I’ve written about online marketing to some extent over at PublicityShip. But I’m looking forward now to more focus around online marketing strategy.

I own and run my own businesses – online marketing is not theoretical for me, it is my primary driver of income. Discussing online marketing strategy in this way helps me clarify my own thinking, and is a lot of fun as well. More on my reasons for blogging are explained on the About page.

What’s In It For You

  • Get a clear understanding of online marketing concepts – I will introduce you to a model that helps you improve the effectiveness of your online marketing efforts.
  • Understand what your alternatives are – this blog will look at different industries and identify alternative strategies for you to consider.
  • See the cost/benefit equation – getting a rough idea of the potential costs and benefits of alternative strategies helps you make better decisions.
  • Case studies – hear what others have tried, and how it has worked for them

Do share your thoughts in the form of comments. I pay close attention to the ideas expressed, and like all bloggers, am encouraged to pay more attention to you.

Welcome!
